Architects and city advancements contractors are busy expanding its uniqueness and have gone to an extent to build the artificial island and even an archipelago famously known as The World Island.
History:
The world Island is a cluster of islands artificially formed and is a depiction of a rough map of the world. Located 4 kilometres off the coast of Persian Gulf, this island was proposed in 2003. By 2008, more than 50% of the island was sold and was completely constructed in the same year. Nakheel Properties took up the project under the rule of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum who had proposed the project.
The World Island Construction
The approximate area for the individual islands ranges from 150,000 square feet to 450,000 square feet. Sand from shallow sea waters were dredged and used to build these islands. Stone boulders and rocks weighing approximately 386 million tons were also utilized for the construction. The islands are about 100 meters away from each other. The entire project has a breakwater boundary covering about 6 kms by 9 kms of area. 232 km shoreline was developed and the entire project costed $14 billion! The entire project was designed by Creative Kingdom of Dubai. This artificial archipelago is situated in-between the other two famous artificial islands namely the Palm Deira and Palm Jumeirah.
Current Projects
In 2003 a total of 300 islands were started to be built but the development was thwarted in 2008 due to the financial crisis. Only two islands have started developing their projects, one being the Sea Horse Villas by Kleindienst Group to be delivered by 2016 end belonging to the St. Petersburg Islands. The Lebanon Island was the first which was commercially developed and currently is the venue for private parties and corporate events. The Royal Island Beach Club is located here.
Future Developmental Plans:
With further construction, different contractors have various innovative plans lined up. The Nakheel Company has planned for a Coral Island comprising of more than 20 individual islands belonging to the North American part of The World. OQYANA resort is planned to be built with 14 islands comprising of Australia and New Zealand part. This resort will be terraformed to mimic natural habitat of the earth. AN Irish themed resort will be built on the Ireland islands whereas the Brunei and Finland islands will e converted into fashion themed resorts owned by FTV. The Heart of Europe is to be the house of a true European resort complete with snow and stores accepting only European currency.
